Meet the Doctor Providing Integrative Functional Medicine for Los Angeles

Joseph Sciabbarrasi M.D. is a practitioner of holistic, functional and integrative medicine with over twenty-five years of experience.

His exploration of traditional forms of healing began prior to entering medical school, and have encompassed nutritional biochemistry, bioidentical hormone replacement, acupuncture, herbal medicine, homeopathy, Shamanic healing, meditation and spiritual training.

His exceptional training and practice arises from the best of both conventional and alternative approaches. He is as comfortable in designing a program of healing utilizing nutrition, supplements and acupuncture as he is discussing medical issues with his colleagues in cardiology, surgery or oncology. This wealth of fluency and expertise is the culmination of a lifetime of involvement in these different worlds of healing.

Within the conventional sphere of training, Dr. Sciabbarrasi is a graduate of Georgetown University where he attained a Bachelors of Science in Biology with a minor in Theology. This was followed by a Masters degree in Microbiology from George Washington University, where he also graduated from the School of Medicine. After completing his internship at New York Hospital, he served 4 years within the military where he began his practice of Emergency Medicine. Board certified in this specialty, a certification he continues to maintain, he was a full time Emergency Room physician in both trauma centers and community hospitals for twelve years.

His training in traditional and alternative medicine has included work with such luminaries as Dr. Milton Erikson, Dr. Anita Cignolini, Dr. Rosalyn Bruyere, the Hahnemann College of Homeopathy, Dr. Jean Houston, as well as travel and study with indigenous healing practices around the world.

Dr. Sciabbarrasi pioneered and co-directed the development of the first extensive alternative medicine presentations and coursework ever offered at a U.S. medical school at George Washington University while a student there. He co-founded and chaired the Biomedical Ethics and Bereavement Support Committee at Centinela Hospital Medical Center while an Emergency physician and developed a Resource Directory for those with cancer and AIDS. He founded the peer support physician group at Centinela Hospital. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Healing Light Center and the South Bay Hospice.

Dr. Sciabbarrasi has been guest faculty and clinical preceptor for UCLAs program for medical students in alternative medicine. He has had numerous local and national interviews on alternative medicine including The Michael Jackson Radio Show, Shape and Ms. Fitness Magazines, The Discovery Television Network, KIEV Radio, and KCOP TV in Los Angeles.

He has lectured and presented workshops at state and national levels with the Los Angeles Society of Emergency Physicians and the California and National assemblies of the American College of Emergency Physicians. He has also been an invited speaker throughout Los Angeles including the first Womens Day Journey to Wellness Conference, Centinela Hospital Medical Center, the Southern California Chapter for Chronic Fatigue, the Wellness Community and the Annual Cancer Conference at Torrance Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Sciabbarrasi has trained in Isshinryu karate, attaining the second level of black belt in this discipline; has studied classical and popular piano for many years and is an enthusiastic swimmer.

He is blessed with the lights of his life, his beautiful wife Kathleen, who is an actress, and his son Kieran.
