Update 02/13: Possible fix

Disabling Netflix autoplay previews on some Roku players does not appear to work. At present, there’s no known fix for the issue. although a pattern does seem to be developing.

Last week, Netflix announced users would no longer be forced to sit through autoplay previews – the trailers displayed as a user hovers over a title card. The news was met with wide praise from Netflix users highlighting how frustrating some had found the previews.

While Netflix made disabling optional [users having to manually opt-out], the process of doing so is fairly simple. Subscribers simply need to visit the web version of Netflix and once opted out, the streaming service would activate the feature across all devices and platforms.

However, Roku users have been running into an issue with disabling the feature. Almost immediately after Netflix announced the change, many Roku users noted that once they had opted out, the Netflix app on Roku players was continuing to show previews.

With the limited information available at the time it was unclear how widespread the issue was, or even if it was an issue. For example, a number of users were finding that if they either rebooted their Roku device, signed out and back into the Netflix app, or updated the app, the issue would disappear. The one exception to this rule appears to be Roku sticks.

Roku sticks might not support autoplay previews yet

It would seem, Roku sticks might not support disabling autoplay previews yet. This posting to the Roku community highlight the issue perfectly, although it’s not the only one with Streaming Better having noted similar complaints on both Reddit and Twitter. Essentially, owners of a Roku Premiere or Ultra appear to be encountering the issue, but then finding one of the various workarounds fixes things – we are also able to confirm the Roku Premiere appears to work fine after disabling autoplay previews.

While there are some exceptions to the rule with select Ultra owners still reporting the issue, almost every case involving a Roku Streaming Stick+ appears to be affected by the problem.

The conclusion many are coming to is that this must be a Netflix issue and not a Roku issue. A verdict that may have some merit considering one comment pointed to this Netflix help page that not only fails to list Roku devices [in general] as supported, but under the “All other devices” option mentions “we are currently researching this error.”

While this would seem to suggest the problem goes beyond Roku streaming sticks, based on the user reports coming through, the Roku Streaming Stick+ is massively lacking support for disabling autoplay previews.

After almost one week of users posting about this issue, a Roku community member has suggested a possible fix. Some users have noted the fix works, albeit without directly mentioning whether it works on the Roku Streaming Stick+ or the other devices that were affected.

Here’s the Netflix autoplay previews disabling fix suggested by Roku:

  1. Remove the Netflix channel from the Roku home screen by navigating to the channel tile, pressing the * key and choosing ‘Remove channel’.
  2. Restart your Roku device from Settings>System>System restart
  3. Add the Netflix channel back once more and sign in again.

One of my favorite features is the ability to enable Netflix to auto-play the next episode when a TV show episode finishes. It’s great for people who have unlimited Internet access, but if you have a bandwidth limit, or fall asleep to watching Netflix shows, you may not want episodes playing all night. Here’s how to turn off the auto play next episode feature.

  1. Login to your Netflix account.
  2. Mouse over your icon at the upper-right corner of the screen, then choose “Account“.
  3. If you have the family plan, you can limit bandwidth for each user. In the “Profile & Parental Controls” select the account for which you want to change bandwidth settings for.
  4. Select the “Change” link next to “Playback settings“.
  5. Check the “Play next episode in a series on all devices” to enable playing the next episode when one finishes, or un-check the box to disable the setting and stop Netflix from playing the next episode. Select the “Save” button once you have made your choice.

This setting is specific to each user. So if you have more than one user on your account, you may have to login as different users to change this setting and make it work as desired.

FAQ

Will Netflix auto play episodes forever if I enable this setting?

No. Even with this setting enabled, Netflix eventually prompts you with a question asking if you wish to continue watching. This prompt displays this about every 3 shows or so.

Is there a way to disable the “Continue Watching” prompt?

There is no way to disable it using settings on the Netflix site. However, there is a Google Chrome extension called “Netflix Pause Remove” that may work for Chrome users.

Does this setting work on all Netflix apps and devices?

No. It doesn’t work on many devices. Older Roku and Android devices are examples of devices this won’t work on.

To quickly sample TV shows and movies, you can set Netflix to play previews automatically.

To autoplay previews:

On an Android phone or tablet

  1. From the Netflix app home screen, tap the profile icon

    or More
    .

  2. Tap Manage Profiles.

  3. Select the profile you want to edit.

  4. Toggle the switch next to Autoplay Previews to turn the setting on or off.

On all other devices

  1. From a web browser, go to your Account page.

  2. Open the Profile & Parental Controls settings for the profile you want to use.

  3. Select Playback settings.

  4. Check Autoplay previews while browsing on all devices.

    • To stop autoplaying previews, uncheck the box. On TVs, turning off Autoplay previews doesn't stop autoplaying from the details page of a TV show or movie.

  5. Select Save.

You may need to refresh your device to pick up the updated settings.

To refresh:

  • Switch to another profile, then switch back.

  • Or, sign out of your device and sign back in.

Update the Netflix app

  1. Open the Play Store app.

  2. In the Search bar, search for "Netflix."

Update the Netflix app

  1. From the Home screen, tap the App Store icon.

  2. Tap Search, then enter "Netflix" in the search box.

  3. Tap Netflix, then tap Update.

    • If asked, enter your Apple ID password.

  4. Once the update is complete, try Netflix again.

All other devices

Restart your device

  1. Turn off your device. If your device has a power cable, unplug it.

    Make sure your device is completely off, not just in sleep or standby mode.

  2. Leave your device off for 30 seconds.

  3. Turn on your device and try Netflix again.
