A good password is made up of a number of different characteristics. For instance, it should be at least 6 - 8 characters long and should include at least two uppercase letters, lowercase letters and numbers. As you mentioned, it shouldn't be obvious. Definitely do not use your children's names or pet's names. For that matter, it shouldn't even be a real word person, place or thing. Use random characters. The more random the sequence of characters, the more secure the password will be.

An example of a secure password would be something like this: Hgs3@4j55nKX!sl

This password is 15 characters long and contains a combination of numbers, symbols, upper and lowercase letters. Since it's long and random, it will be far tougher for someone to hack.

For workstations on a Windows network, Microsoft has developed official password creation rules. These rules are as follows:

Passwords MUST be at least 6 characters long
Passwords MAY NOT contain your username or any part of your full name
Passwords MUST contain characters from at least three of the four class characteristics, which are listed below.

Numerals
Non-Alphanumeric [Punctuation marks and other symbols]
Remember, having a secure password is meaningless if you write it down and leave it where anybody could find it. However, if you have difficulty remembering a random password, then you can use a common word like "password," for example, but add three of the four class characteristics to it to make it more secure, such as "paSSw0rd." While not as secure as a completely random password, it still meets the outlined criteria, thus making it far more efficient then your kid's name.

best way for a strong password is it should at least be 8 characters long
it should include alphanumerical as well as symbols in it.
try not to keep DOB or other common information which is of public knowledge as your password
try to think of something unique
make sure that your password is something you can remember easily or wont forget easily
try not to write down your password where it is accessible to other people.
don't use common passwords such as abcde.... as your password
there are innumerable ways to strengthen your password and this post can keep continuing for a long time but i will take my leave here.

Best way is to create password in three parts
1st part is the base password which would be a combination of numbers and letters of your choice
second part would be any special character

Enter your User Name and Password only in the space provided for- that you are normally used to.


Any changes from normal make sure there is no attempt to steal your personal information before providing it.


Do not provide User Name and Password on any page popping up by clicking on a hyperlink received through email.


Better practice would be to log into the service by typing in the URL in the address bar after making sure the page opening up is from the genuine service provider.



Do not store passwords in a file on ANY computer system [including Palm Pilots or similar devices] without encryption.

Unique Characters: An acceptable password must have at least five [5] different characters. Repeated characters can make for palindromes and make it easier to crack.

Forbidden Characters: There are a few characters that will cause problems if used in a password - the "delete" character is one of the obvious ones.



Writing down your password: One should never write down a password. Someone may discover the password. Make the password difficult for others to guess or crack but easy for you to memorise and remember.



Passwords should not be any of the following:

Dictionary words [including foreign and technical dictionaries]

Name of a person or a thing, a place, a proper noun, a phone number or a vehicle number

Simple pattern of letters on keyboards
Any of the above reversed or concatenated






One possible method for picking a good password is to make up your own acronym.



Do not let your computer remember your password. Do not accept auto complete option provided by your computer/ browser.





As far as possible do not use un-trusted system to access sensitive service. If you must, change the password on the first occasion immediately thereafter from a trusted system.
