Trong thể loại game chiến thuật, việc hiển thị rõ ràng và tỉ mỉ từng cánh quân, các thao tác và hành động của chúng trên chiến trường ngoài việc hỗ trợ rất tốt cho tư duy chiến thuật hay điều khiển còn mang lại không khí hùng tráng, máu lửa cho người chơi.
Total War: Rome II sử dụng công nghệ đồ họa mới có khả năng tái hiện chiến trường lên đến hàng chục ngàn người với hiệu ứng phá hủy hoành tráng. Những góc quay camera mới cũng sẽ được bổ sung nhằm đem lại cho game thủ cảm giác sống động của từng trận đánh.
Đây được coi là phiên bản nối tiếp Rome: Total War 2004, game sẽ hướng người xem tập trung vào cốt truyện hay những quyết định cá nhân mang tính lịch sử của một vài nhân vật nổi tiếng. Những bất hòa trong nội bộ và các âm mưu chính trị sẽ đóng một phần quan trọng trong trò chơi.
