Is Ford redesigning the 2023 F250?

Car manufacturers often introduce cars of a later model year much earlier to highlight some of the upgrades consumers can expect in an upcoming model. That's the case with the 2023 Ford F-250. Despite undergoing modifications for 2020 and 2021 models, the Ford Motor Company is expected to give the 2023 Ford Super Duty lineup a total overhaul.

Ford Motor Company was most likely compelled to redesign its F-250 Super Duty series to stay ahead of its top competitors, such as the Chevy Silverado and GMC trucks. Revising its Super Duty series also offers the company an opportunity to keep up with the latest car technology for the 2023 Ford F-250 and other models.

A sneak peek at the 2023 Ford F-250 and the redesigned line

According to Ford Authority, Ford Motor Company is still keeping the details about the 2023 Ford F-250 redesign under wraps.

However, one thing that's known is that the Super Duty truck will still be available with a diesel engine despite the American automaker dropping the 3.0L Power Stroke for the F-150. Due to the high competition in the truck sector, Ford is expected to upgrade the model's engine output regarding horsepower and torque.

The 2020 model featured several upgrades, including the aesthetic appearance, new technology, and an all-new Ford's 7.3L Godzilla V8 engine. With the 2022 model, it’s easy to notice the updated interior and exterior colors, new tech features, and revised appearance packages.

Before the 2023 Ford F-250, what does the 2022 lineup offer?

If you're planning to invest in the 2022 Ford F-250 next year, you can expect several impressive upgrades that include a SYNC 4, 12-inch center touchscreen infotainment system, similar to the one found in the 2021 Ford F-150 model. However, that will only be a standard feature in higher trims: Lariat, Limited, Platinum, XL, and XLT.

Additionally, there are a few upgrades in the 2022 model's Appearance Packages. For instance, the Lariat will now feature an appearance upgrade that includes exterior mirrors, body-color bumpers, grille, black running boards, and chrome tailpipes. Shoppers of the XLT can enjoy a Black Appearance Package that includes ebony-black wheels, body-color front, and rear bumpers, ebony-black running boards, and grille bars.

Nonetheless, Ford enthusiasts will not see several features in the 2022 Super Duty truck. The under-hood service light will be unavailable, and so will be the Tremor Off-Road Package for the XLT trim level. On a more promising note, a pair of Super Duty trucks was seen running on autonomous vehicle (AV) hardware used for hands-free technology, indicating that Ford plans to advance its new BlueCruise feature soon.

Shortcomings in the current 2021 model

The Ford F-250 has always been a go-to truck for people looking for a heavy-duty vehicle that can handle heavy loads and unforgiving working conditions. And while it does an excellent job at that, the current 2021 has had two main issues, forcing the manufacturer to recall some of its 2021 models.

One of the problems is the visibility caused by stability issues with the windshield in the A-pillar. The American automaker was compelled to recall some of its 2021 F-150, F-250, F-350, and F-550 Super Duty trucks. These vehicles had improperly fitted windshields, increasing their chances of getting detached during a crash. Granted, they did not meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).

As indicated by Consumer Reports, another issue affected the steering and suspension systems, caused by a faulty Centerline Stabilizer Kit with part number 65050. The manufacturer, Icon Vehicle Dynamics, is thus recalling specific models, including the F-250 and F-350. The faulty stabilizer caused the steering system to lock up, increasing the risk of crashing.

Ford brands its heavy-duty trucks, the F 250 and larger, as its Super Duty line. For generations, Ford has been alternating its F150 and Super Duty redesigns. It looks like the 2023 Ford Super Duty F 250 and F350 will borrow several key features from the current F150. One of these may be hands-free driving.

Will the 2023 F250 Super Duty be redesigned?

Ford has been selling its fourth-generation Super Duty from 2017 to the present. The automaker refreshed the truck for the 2020 model year. Ford historically introduces new Super Duty generations every five or six years. Therefore, a 2023 redesign would be right on schedule.

Spy shots show the 2023 Ford Super Duty trucks with a redesigned front fascia and grille. It also appears that the rear bumper and taillights will be all-new. Because Ford is still covering its test trucks in camouflage, we are not yet sure exactly what the new Super Duty trucks will look like.

It is unlikely Ford will make any dramatic changes to the Super Duty’s door and bed sheet metal. That said, Ford also camouflaged the sides of all its test trucks.

Driving Canada pointed out that Ford F 350 XL test trucks spotted in the wild still had incandescent headlight bulbs. But Ford may offer an LED upgrade.

The interior of the new Ford Super Duty is reminiscent of the latest-generation F 150. Its new steering wheel looks just like the latest F 150 wheel. It retains the column-mounted shifter and at least the base models have analog gauges framing a digital driver’s display.

Will the 2023 Ford Super Duty F 250 offer hands-free driving?

In June 2021, Ford Authority spotted two Super Duty trucks completing test runs while outfitted with autonomous vehicle hardware. This hardware included an array of cameras and sensors on both ends of the truck and an extra array on the roof. Evidence points to a hands-free option for the F 250 and F 350.

Ford now offers its BlueCruise hands-free driving technology on several trim levels of the 2022 F 150. This technology builds on adaptive cruise control and can keep your truck centered in your lane for you. To use it, you have to keep your eyes on the road and be driving on a pre-mapped Interstate highway.

We do not know whether the 2023 Super Duty will offer hands-free driving, but we do know Ford has been testing this technology on both the F 250 and F 350 for at least nine months.

Will Ford put a hybrid drivetrain in the 2023 Super Duty F 250?

Because the latest generation of the Ford F 150 offers a hybrid drivetrain, many truck enthusiasts wonder whether the 2023 Super Duty will feature some form of hybrid.

TFL Truck pointed out that some of the 2023 Super Duty test trucks are wearing a unique new tailpipe. This may well signal a new drivetrain option.

It seems unlikely Ford would offer the F 150’s 3.5-liter turbocharged “Powerboost” hybrid in its Super Duty trucks. This engine would require a different, smaller transmission and might not offer enough power for even F 250 Super Duty buyers.

That said, onboard power is a sought-after option for work truck buyers. A hybrid Super Duty truck, whether it combined an electric motor with the current gasoline or diesel V8, could be a game-changer.

Such a truck would need a large onboard battery. With an inverter, it could offer 110 and 220-volt power on the job site. It could even have a self-jumpstart feature in case its standard 12-volt battery went flat.
