When would the risk of another seizure in a client with eclampsia decrease?
Eclampsia is the new onset of seizures or coma in a pregnant woman with preeclampsia. These seizures are not related to an existing brain condition. Show CausesThe exact cause of eclampsia is not known. Factors that may play a role include:
Eclampsia follows a condition called preeclampsia. This is a complication of pregnancy in which a woman has high blood pressure and other findings. Most women with preeclampsia do not go on to have seizures. It is hard to predict which women will. Women at high risk of seizures often have severe preeclampsia with findings such as:
Your chances of getting preeclampsia increase when:
SymptomsSymptoms of eclampsia include:
Most women will have these symptoms of preeclampsia before the seizure:
Exams and TestsThe health care provider will do a physical exam to look for causes of seizures. Your blood pressure and breathing rate will be checked regularly. Blood and urine tests may be done to check:
TreatmentThe main treatment to prevent severe preeclampsia from progressing to eclampsia is giving birth to the baby. Letting the pregnancy go on can be dangerous for you and the baby. You may be given medicine to prevent seizures. These medicines are called anticonvulsants. Your provider may give medicine to lower high blood pressure. If your blood pressure stays high, delivery may be needed, even if it is before the baby is due. Possible ComplicationsWomen with eclampsia or preeclampsia have a higher risk for:
When to Contact a Medical ProfessionalContact your provider or go to the emergency room if you have any symptoms of eclampsia or preeclampsia. Emergency symptoms include seizures or decreased alertness. Seek medical care right away if you have any of the following:

Can eclampsia seizures be stopped? In this case, your doctor may prescribe magnesium sulfate as well as medications to help reduce blood pressure. Magnesium sulfate therapy is used to prevent seizures in women with preeclampsia. It can also help prolong a pregnancy for up to two days.
How does eclampsia manage seizures?Magnesium sulfate should be given to control convulsions and is the first-line treatment for eclamptic seizures. A loading dose of 4 to 6 grams should be given intravenously over 15 to 20 minutes. A maintenance dose of 2 g per hour should subsequently be administered.
Does eclampsia always cause seizures?Eclampsia follows a condition called preeclampsia. This is a complication of pregnancy in which a woman has high blood pressure and other findings. Most women with preeclampsia do not go on to have seizures. It is hard to predict which women will.
What causes the seizures in eclampsia?Eclampsia is characterized by generalized convulsions in pregnant women with hypertension and proteinuria. Little is known about what triggers the convulsions in this syndrome. The prevailing view is that convulsions are caused by cerebral vasospasm and cerebral edema.
