The Certified Medical Administrative Assistant [CMAA] program is a 5 week, 30 hour classroom based program that is specifically designed to prepare students for the National Healthcareer Association’s CMAA certification exam, which will be administered in class on the last day of the program.

The CMAA program provides the student with entry level knowledge ranging from standard office skills and office procedures, to developing a knowledge base in medical terminology, record keeping systems, transcription and patient file maintenance, with a focus on the non-clinical aspects of the medical office environment.

Course Content

  • Understanding computer systems or other types of technology as they relate to office tasks
  • Reviewing and answering medical practice correspondence
  • Office Protocol: Taking calls, scheduling appointments, greeting patients, and maintaining files
  • Updating and maintaining patient and other practice-specific information
  • Coordinating collection and preparation of operating reports such as time and attendance, etc.

Job Outlook:

Overall employment of medical secretaries and administrative assistants is expected to grow 12 percent from 2010 to 2020, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Among specialties, medical secretary is the only occupation that is expected to have much-faster-than-average employment growth. This is driven by the rapid growth of the healthcare industry. Overall, the majority of job openings will result from the need to replace workers who leave these occupations.

This course prepares you for the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant [CMAA] certification exam.

This class is designed to prepare the students to take Certified Medical Administrative Assistant Exam. The units will cover but are not limited to scheduling, patient intake, compliance, [HIPAA & OSHA], general office policies and procedures, basic medical terminology, Microsoft Word and Outlook. The class will be held in the classroom setting and online. A High School Diploma or equivalent is required before the certification testing can be complete. Students with school approval may work simultaneously on the high school requirement. Register year round in the Merced Adult School office between, 8:00am-8:00pm M-Th and 8:00am-3:00pm F.
