(From Tokina lens literature) The next generation of AT-X is the AT-X PRO SV series. The fist introduction is the AT-X 287 AF PRO SV, an exceptional 28-70 f/2.8 auto focus lens. With its emphasis on value, its cornerstone is it's heritage of Tokina HLD optical glass. Advancements in fabrication technology and the greater use of composite materials have created a lens that is lighter in weight yet more substantial value. The constant f/2.8 aperture makes focusing and shooting in low light situations much easier than other standard lens with smaller apertures. An internal focusing system couple to a Focus Clutch Mechanism yields quick and quiet auto focus as well as smoothly damped manual focus action.

  • 8 out of 10 pointsand recommended by dugong5pm (52 reviews) feels like a pro lens, sharp none for the price I found it for $350 used. I think it was quite a bargain. This lens doesn't feel cheap at all. In fact, it's mostly made out of metal parts. IQ is good, very acceptable images wide open. I've got mine for the Sony alpha version, AF is ok, though might seems a lil bit noisy. I bought this lens to replace my 18-70 lenskit, and it's totally worth it. reviewed October 13th, 2012 (purchased for $350)

Large constant aperture. Low price. Well built. Good image quality for the price.

Heavy. More money can buy you better quality.

I bought this lens to go with my D50 because

  1. I wanted a fast full frame zoom that could also be used with my FM2n s
  2. It was cheap enough

The image quality has been better on the D50 than I expected. It can be a bit soft wide open, but then so if you want to be critical can an AIS 50mm f1.4. The built quality feels excellent though I've not dropped it to test.

It is fine tool to work with. But one cannot go above some medium expectiations when better lenses are around.. Good point first: It will do its job, fast, reliable, comfortable (except missing WR), no surprises in the results. Colours are fine. Contrast in fine detail not that much. For a bit of a cure only use it above f4.0.

As a cure against flare light, I found a M35-70, but with results quite a deal better, overall contrast samewise. But that comfort, as with AF, is gone then.

Then had a class above in quality for comparison, with the DFA-15-30. Ok, this is sharpness then, in a different region. Partly it can be approached with the M35-70 as well (for me the former for 900+ Euro, the latter for 90 Euro). But not with this Tokina.

As soon as being curious with a bit of pixel peeping, yes, one may find decent results as well with the Tokina, in sharpness, but should not ask for convincing contrast in fine detail, at the same time. So for some topic it may survive as a fine tool, even when alternatives are around. But for everyday stuff it's not much above just very normal.

When staying in the realm of the nowadays "HQ 1024"-resolution, no questions will arrive anyway, to just go with it.

Review Date: August 4, 2018 Recommended | Price: $180.00 | Rating: 9 Pros: Sharpness, low distortion. Cons: None Sharpness: 9 Aberrations: 9 Bokeh: 8 Handling: 9 Value: 9 Camera Used: FF, Crop A sharp compact lens. Build is solid, mostly metal, with 72mm filters.

This lens is crisp, sharp from F/2.8. Edge to edge sharpness is very good even on full frame.

Distortion is minimal.

On crop cameras, the extra length makes a useful portrait lens.

Colour is good and fairly neutral.

Review Date: August 12, 2015 Recommended | Price: $185.00 | Rating: 9 Pros: wide aperture, solid built (metal), goodlooking 72mm filter size Cons: rotating front element Sharpness: 9 Aberrations: 9 Bokeh: 9 Handling: 9 Value: 9 Camera Used: K-7 Good old lens which has much better built quality than the modern lenses. No dust problem at all unlike tamrons. Multicoated optics still works great. AF speed is impressive, even faster than other brands.

Good portrait lens. Bokeh is smooth and creamy with subject remaining crisp.

Range as general purpose lens or kit replacement make this great for use as a walkabout lens.

This non-pro version deliver tack sharp images even at F2.8, when stop down to F4 this version performs razor sharp images.

There is no notable distortion with the lens being usable right through the range. Acceptable clarity wide open, and getting dangerously sharp from F4.

This is a very handy lens at a very nice price, hardly recommended.

Review Date: August 6, 2015 Recommended | Price: $200.00 | Rating: 9 Pros: Sharp! Even wide open. Good build, feels quite solid. Cons: none Sharpness: 10 Aberrations: 8 Bokeh: 10 Handling: 8 Value: 10 Camera Used: k-01 Love this lens. Impressive build quality. Nice colors Nice bokeh wide opened Nice Saturated colors (better than the tamron 28-75)

I prefer this lens over the tamron 28-75 on the overall picture rendition. The build quality is full metal solid compared to the full plastic Tamron. AF is very fast even in low light but you feel the torque due to the weight of the focus element.

Great value for money. As sharp as the Tamron, maybe even better at f4 and above.
