Does the 2023 Honda HRV EXL have a sunroof?

The cute little Honda HR-V isn't so cute and little anymore. Fully redesigned for 2023, it's tougher-looking and larger than before. Since the Fit it previously shared its platform with is gone, the HR-V is now built on the same structure that underpins the excellent Civic. For the new model year, Honda offers the HR-V in three trim levels: LX, Sport, and EX-L. Keep reading to learn the features, equipment, and details on every 2023 Honda HR-V trim.

2023 Honda HR-V: Standard Features

Certain core features are shared between every 2023 HR-V. All are powered by a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine connected to a CVT automatic, with FWD standard and AWD available for $1,500 on each trim. A push-button start and electronic parking brake are equipped on all.

Outside, LED headlights and body-color door handles improve the HR-V's presentation. Inside, niceties include rear-seat heat ducts, three USB ports, and a 7.0-inch digital gauge display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included.

Every HR-V trim comes with an impressive amount of driver assist and active safety tech. Automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and automatic high-beams are part of the Honda Sensing suite. New front-row knee airbags and second-row side airbags bolster the HR-V's safety credentials.

2023 Honda HR-V LX: Features and Specs

The entry-level HR-V rolls on 17-inch wheels and, like the other trims, has a small spoiler on the roof's trailing edge. The side mirrors are power-adjustable, and the headlights and brakelights have LED bulbs.

In the cabin, cloth upholstery covers the manually adjustable seats. A 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen plays audio through a four-speaker sound system. Conveniences include a one-touch up/down driver's door window and sun visor vanity mirrors.

Like the other HR-V trims, the LX has a 12-volt socket in the cargo area. That cargo area measures 24.4 cubic feet and expands to 55.1 cubic feet when the 60/40 split-folding second-row seats are folded down. Fuel economy comes in at 26/32 mpg city/highway with FWD, and 25/30 mpg with AWD. The 2023 HR-V LX starts at $24,895.

2023 Honda HR-V Sport: Features and Specs

Sport is a bit of a misnomer for this trim. The engine and chassis go untouched; slightly quicker steering and 18-inch wheels with wider tires are the only features resembling performance upgrades. At least the HR-V Sport looks sportier, thanks to its black-finished wheels, side mirror caps, spoiler, and grille. A chrome exhaust tip finishes it off. Red seat stitching livens up the  .

Even if the Sport trim isn't quite an HR-V Si, it brings useful functionality improvements. Remote engine start lets you warm things up before you get in, and hands-free keyless entry lets you get in more easily. With heated front seats, a six-speaker audio system, and tinted rear glass, the interior is a nicer place to be. Leather wrapping is applied to the steering wheel and shift knob. The passenger door window gains one-touch up/down functionality, and the vanity mirrors become illuminated. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert keep tabs on what's behind. The 2023 HR-V Sport starts at $26,895.

2023 Honda HR-V EX-L: Features and Specs

The range-topping HR-V EX-L can be visually distinguished by its moonroof and two-tone wheels. Sharp-eyed observers will notice parking sensors integrated into the front and rear bumpers, which also help provide automatic braking in low-speed parking maneuvers.

Most of the changes happen inside, where, as the "L" implies, the HR-V EX-L is equipped with leather seating upholstery. The driver's seat becomes power-adjustable, too. Several tech upgrades are added. The infotainment touchscreen grows to 9.0 inches and gains wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, as well as SiriusXM and HD radio. Your tunes play through an eight-speaker system. There's also a wireless charging pad.

Other premium enhancements include a dual-zone climate control system, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and interior ambient lighting. The 2023 HR-V EX-L starts at $28,695.

2023 Honda HR-V: Pros and Cons

Our first drive of the 2023 HR-V left us thinking that it's a resounding improvement over its predecessor. The packaging is better, adding interior space while creating a more ergonomic and user-friendly area for those up front. Given that the HR-V now shares a platform with the Civic, it's perhaps no surprise that there's great handling poise and ride comfort. With AWD equipped, it comports itself decently on unpaved surfaces, too.

Unfortunately, the HR-V's engine is the Civic's entry-level offering—and since the HR-V is larger and heavier, it feels very slow. Given how hard we had to drive it just to keep up with traffic, we're doubtful the HR-V can actually deliver on its fuel economy rating—already worse than the first-generation model. But beyond a more powerful turbocharged or hybridized powertrain offering, there's not much we'd ask for to improve the 2023 HR-V.

What's the Best 2023 Honda HR-V Trim?

In basic LX trim, the 2023 HR-V may be inexpensive, but it's certainly not cheap. Features including its LED lighting, useful technology, and numerous driver aids give the HR-V LX value appeal. Improvements on the range-topping HR-V EX-L such as leather upholstery, parking sensors, and a larger infotainment touchscreen seem like nice-to-haves more than need-to-haves.

That leaves the HR-V Sport as our choice in the range. Its heated front seats, keyless entry, and additional safety assists would come in handy every day. Nor would we mind the improved sound quality from its six-speaker system, or its snazzy black styling details. We'd budget to add AWD to the Sport trim before stepping up to the HR-V EX-L. However it's equipped, though, the new 2023 Honda HR-V seems like a solid competitor in the subcompact SUV space.
