question

Recently noticed very high memory usage of Windows Defender via task manager. 85% even with minimal browsers and windows open.

How can this be reduced other than installing more memory?

Did you install any program or make any changes to your PC?
Try run Windows Update and download and install all updates.

Hi there,

For most people, the high memory usage caused by Antimalware Service Executable typically happens when Windows Defender is running a full scan. We can remedy this by scheduling the scans to take place at a time when you're less likely to feel the drain on your CPU.

If the High CPU is not during the scan then you can try running the SFC & DISM scan to sort this out

I would also suggest you to create a new account on your PC and check if you have same memory usage as the corrupted user profile might also cause this issue.

Hello folks,

just wanted to share my experience. I'm no expert, but surely not a rookie either; said that: I searched the web tirelessly for solution with this issue. I have a brand new Asus ROG Laptop and couldn't understand why with all it's processing power (after a couple of months of usage) it would get kind of stuck on startup (Win opening fast, but then you had to wait several minutes to be able to open say chrome and use it, it would simply load forever). Found out that Defender was using more than 2gb of memory during these "episodes" so my search began... I'll make this short: after all the things I checked, it was freaking Itunes.... can't really say how or why, I had a hunch and it paid off; uninstalled Itunes, now starts like a Ferrari! :D
If you have the same issue, I'd probably investigate your last installed program (this was not my case, but you have to start somewhere) or tey to check programs like "MyAsus", "ArmoryCrate" and "Gamefirst" and see what program they're buffing for no reason.
Hope this help someone.

Ciao ciao ;)

question details

I have upgraded my Surface Pro 4 tablet to Windows 10 Fall creators update 1709 build. After I use the Edge browser to view webpage and open Email app, the system becomes slowly and sometime the UI is almost fully unresponsible. Within the Task Manager, I notice that the NisSrv.exe process/service takes up to 2Gb of a commit memory and eat with about 250 kb per second. To restore that normally, I have to make a reboot to get rid of this behavior but it will appear hours later. Is it a vrus? How can I resolve the problem?

The NisSrv.exe legitimate process is the Microsoft Network Realtime Inspection Service, as well as a module of Microsoft security software. In Windows 10, it is used for the built-in Windows Defender to help guard against intrusion attempts targeting known and newly discovered vulnerabilities in network protocols. The full location is at C:\Program Files\Windows Defender in File Explorer.

A few people have reproted that the NisSrv.exe use high memory usage after Windows 10 1709 update. The temporary workaround is to disable Windows Defender Real time protection. After turn off the toggle switch for Real-time protection, the CPU/memory usage goes normal, but it is not safe for system.

I prefer the solution to uninstall Windows Defender completely and use the third-party antivirus app. You could follow the method to disable Windows Defender Security Center service and then install the kaspersky, Eset nod32, or Malwarebytes.

Microsoft hasn’t released the path for that through the Windows update since now. So you can try those tips to fix the slow performance issue on your Windows 10 tablet or computer.
