This is my first post on DPreview and specially after observing how helpful the community is i want you all to help me solve my dilemma

M gonna be buying my First DSLR, It has to be either Canon 750D or Nikon D5500. I have personally tried, handled and observed both of them for quite some time in a Camera Store but the main issue is that the Camera will be primarily used for YouTube Electronic and Gadget Product Reviews at my Channel.

Both the Cameras perform Good but here are the things that worry me :

1. Nikon doesn't have OLPF (optical low pass Filter ) so it produces visibly sharper pictures and videos whereas Canon having the OLPF produces softer videos which isn't that great for Canon !

2. I personally like the Nikon more because of the Ergonomics, features, and the Weight of the camera over Canon.

3. There's one very big problem with nikon that the aperture cannot be changed in the live view mode while shooting a video and we have to go back every time for doing it so i want to know how bad is it really going to affect the whole scenario in practical.

4. Even though the Camera will be mainly used or Video, i would obviously take pictures too but i don't know why i feel that nikon is slightly better in terms of photos over canon.

5. I know that Canon is really Good with Videos and Autofocus but i really like nikon but i still want an expert's advice on what camera should i pick and how much challenging is it gonna be if i choose Nikon ?

Thanks a Lot !

Re: NIKON D5500 vs Canon 750D for Videography

1. True but you might need to correct morie in post production. I would take the non filterd over filtered any time with the morie risk.

2. For videos ergonomic does not matter as with photography. I also like Nikon ergo. But there are folks who like canon ergonomics. I haven't tried Nikon much but when I tried I thought that ergonomics better than Canon to my prefrence. But yet I had to live with canon becaue in my country nikon was handled by a worse dealer.

3. I don't know about apeture implementation in D5500. But If this issue is there It would be a big drawback. Because in Canon ISO can be only changed in full. 100,200,400. no middle gain ISOs. We will keep shutter according to 180rule typically. So Apeture control the light most of the time than DOF in my work.

4. Yes you are right Nikon has better sensors and you also like the their ergonomics. But Body does not matter compared to glasses. That is the other reason I choose canon. Not because Nikon is bad they didn't have the lenses I want for the price I coud pay. Eg EF 400mm f/5.6L

5. it depend on what type of videography you are going to do. If you always do that in a controllled enviroment it won't be a disadvantage. But If the apeture issue is there It would be bad to shoot in handneld natural light shooting. Very less people use Autofocus for video even if it get super advance. If the apeture issue is true. Then simply nikon is better for stills and canon is better for footage.

All the best

So how bad could it turn out to be if i chose the Nikon d5500 over Canon 750d ? Because in that camera i gues aperture is a function of zoom. more i zoom , the aperture stops down !

I read about D5500 for you.

It is for a technical reason. Every Nikon DSLR does aperture control through a mechanical lever from the body itself. This lever can only to go one aperture value at a time, and has to reset to the original point (or widest aperture) before it can go to a different one. Therefore, you can't get smooth aperture control like in a Canon camera, as the Canon apertures are controlled electromagnetically through the contacts from the Lens.

In Nikon changing ISO and Shutter Speed you can see the Exposure changes on the LCD, but say you are at Aperture F2.0 and it is too bright, your ISO is already at 100 and you want to keep Shutter Speed at a fix 1/50 for 24p. Your only option without using and ND filter is to Stop down your aperture, well with the D5500 you can't stop down in live view. You can spin the dial all you want but it will not change the Aperture so you will not be able to see the exposure effect and find out how much you need to stop down. You need to TURN OFF Live View, then change the Aperture then hop back in Live View to see if that is what you want... if its not what you want, TURN OFF Live View AGAIN and change it AGAIN then hope back in AGAIN.... On 750D all you need to do is spin the dial and see which aperture you want. Mentioned variable apeture issue on zooming exist on both kitlenses and it is a limitation of lens not the body. That is why in the specification of the lens they specify two apetures such as f/3.5-f/5.6. This means at widest focal length it will be f/3.5 and it will slow down to f/5.6 as you zoom. Typically people will shoot at f/5.6 to avoid light loss if they have zoom intentions. You can always buy constant zoom lenses in future to avoid this issue or live with prime lenses (fixed wide apeture) as I do. I would say If you buy 750D as your main focus is video. But if you have more money to put in You can get 760D which has better controls. And if you put more money you can get 70D which has epic autofocusing capabilities and more rugged body. If you are fine with hoping around to change the exposure and you want ultimate sharpness in photos get the Nikon. But Canon is not very bad on sharpness. Nikon is tad better because of SONY's sensor.

Re: NIKON D5500 vs Canon 750D for Videography

I was in a similar situation some weeks ago tossing up between Nikkon and Canon. Then I found out that Lightroom doesn't import Nikkon RAW files but Canon does. As I only shoot in RAW, that settled it. I bought the 750D and it is one of the best cameras I ever had (Except the Mamyaflex C330 in my younger days). I also shoot lots of video for my You Tube channels and I am extremely pleased with the HD video of the 750, although sometimes I need to correct some footage when i am editing in Final Cut Pro X.

Good luck with your decision.

My NIkon D5100 does it! i import and edit my .NEF (raw) files through lightroom. Sad.. you can't.

For what you want to do neither is ideal. Shooting video solo is easier and generally better using a mirrorless camera (unless you go for a real video camera), with Panasonic generally seen as the front runner. Look for one with a fully articulated (selfie!) screen.

They also shoot very decent stills.

I have to agree with Albert. Only you know why your choice has to be one of these models, but for your intended camera uses a mirrorless camera (like the Sony a6000 or Panasonic G7) would be a better choice. That said, if I had to choose one or the other it would be the Canon. I didn't like the "extra work" of going in and out of live view on the Nikon (although I liked everything else about the camera).

For videos Canon all the way. Unless you want to stick with manual focus. You also have access to cheaper ultra wide angle lens (10-18 STM) which you're probably going to use. With Nikon you're force to use manual focus or you'll see and hear the hunting unless you have external audio.
