Son elf matte lip color review

This Elf matte lip colour comes in a matte black tube with a twist-and-lock mechanism. The twisting of the tube is quite smooth and you can actually see how much product you are getting. The tube is colour-coded at the bottom, which makes the identification of the shade so much easier. The coloured band at the bottom is actually a little sharpener for the lipstick which is supposed to be used for giving your lipstick a pointed shape. I personally don’t prefer to use a sharpener for such packaging as sharpening leads to a lot of wastage. Plus, the lipstick is already quite slim for the application. The lipstick tube came stacked in a black paper packaging with shade and colour mentioned at the bottom. Overall, I love the packaging.

Tea Rose shade is a beautiful rose shade with purple undertones. There is no scent or flavour to this lipstick which is actually a good thing for me. The lipstick is quite creamy and feels very light when applied on the lips. The application is also very smooth and it glides nicely on the lips. The shade is very light so I need many strokes to cover my lips. Now, here comes the problem! I have super dry lips and somehow this lipstick is just not for me. I mean I have seen this range looking so awesome on others but I was so disappointed when I applied to my lips.

Son elf matte lip color review

Firstly, my lips are a little bit pigmented as they remain very dry nowadays. Secondly, this lipstick dries out my lips more. The shade and the texture both do not look good at all on my lips. This lipstick actually highlights my fine lines and makes them look even worse. I thought of trying it with a lip balm but it actually made my lips appear more pigmented. I also tried it after exfoliating my lips and it looked better. Still, it makes my lips very dry after some time. The staying power is average and reapplication is required after every few hours. The best part is that it does not transfer when I drink something. Overall it’s a good shade and range for people with hydrated and non-pigmented lips maybe. It is a good product, just that it is not for me.

I was gifted this from my friend Q like, an eternity ago, but the review is finally here – I am reviewing the E.l.f Velvet Matte Lipstick in Burgundy! We all know I love a bit of Burgundy!

The packaging is simple matte plastic, sturdy and not prone to breaking. The design is not really special but it still looks a bit different to what I have at the moment so I can spot it amongst my stash. I like that the packaging has the colour underneath, so if I store it upside down I’ll know what colour it is, too even if I had multiple of this range.

It’s £4.50, and you can purchase it at Superdrug or on the E.l.f. Website.

It’s very similar to the Rimmel Kate in 107, the formula is perhaps a tiny bit lighter but otherwise identical, but one major plus that the elf lipstick has over Rimmel is that it’s cruelty-free! I know 107 is very close to MAC Diva but if you want to avoid MAC for selling in China, elf don’t sell in China either so this is a good replacement choice.

Overall, this is a good thumbs up from me. A classic shade in an affordable, cruelty-free version can hardly be a no.

However, on a more personal note, it’s just not something I am picking up a lot recently and I’m not taking it with me to Korea either, so it might not be worn regularly for a while.

On another note, please do tell me if you have any recommendations for K-Beauty products while I am in Korea!! I need to start building a list!!

As you probably already know, my makeup obsession is quite big. I have many different products in many categories. There are some products I’ve been able to cut down on and tell myself “YOU DON’T NEED ANYMORE!!!”, but there are other products that I just can’t get enough of and I continue on buying more and more of them – lipsticks an eyeshadow palettes. So if you’ll see that many of my post revolve around these products, don’t be surprised.

And so today I will tell you about some of my favorite lipsticks – the e.l.f. Matte Lip Color line. I’ve previously written about a few e.l.f. products I own (in my Pushed Aside Products post) and the company has a wide variation of products – some are fantastic and are easily compared to high end brands, some are less than fantastic and some are plain awful (and have quickly found their way to the nearest garbage). But their Matte Lip Colors are probably my favorite product of all.

The lipsticks come in form of a jumbo pencil and remind me of the Colourpop Lippie Stix in shape and size, they both twist up so there is no need to sharpen them every time. The packaging is black and sleek while the tip is colored and indicates the shade of the lipstick (although it isn’t always accurate). By the way, I recently discovered by accident that this colorful tip actually comes out and it is a sharpener! Super cool. When first using the lipsticks the bullet has a a pointed tip which allows an easy application and it also works as a lip liner so there is no use for a separate liner…it’s two products in one! With time the sharpened tip obviously gets more rounded but it is still easy to apply without having to sharpen (since I’m too lazy to use the built in sharpener).

Most of the lipsticks are smooth, easy to apply and don’t dry the lips. But as much as I love these lipsticks, they aren’t perfect. The lighter shades are quite drying, don’t apply evenly and require a few layers to get an opaque color and generally don’t look as good as the darker shades. They really emphasize lines and dryness of the lips (you can see in the images below). The medium and darker shades are however much friendlier. They look, feel and apply nicely. These lipsticks aren’t the most long wearing, the longest wear time I’ve had with one of them is about 5 hours. When eating the longevity is much shorter.

According to the official website the lipsticks contain vitamins A, C and E which are supposed to moisturize the lips, but as I’ve mentioned above the lighter shades don’t feel moisturizing at all. In the website there are 15 available shades, while each shade contains 0.05 oz (1.4 grams) of product and a single lipstick cost only $3. The official website ships only within the USA, however there are a few other sites which ship worldwide (though they don’t sell all 15 shades): At BeautyJoint there are 11 available shades ($4 a piece), at Blue Scandal there are 7 available shades (with the high price of $5.25 a piece) and at there are 5 shades available ($3 a piece) as well as a set of 4 shades (which costs $10 for all four).

I own 8 shades of the range:

Nearly Nude

Nearly Nude

This is the brightest shade of the bunch, and the worst one in my opinion. It is the least opaque and it does not apply smoothly. A few layers are required if you want to get anything near an even application and the main issue is that the formula is just dry and emphasizes lines and dry skin. It is important to use a lip balm with this one. As much as I love these lipsticks, this specific one is a bust. The color is pretty though, as the name suggests it is a light nude one with a bit of peachy undertones. I’m glad my lips are naturally pigmented, they show a bit through this shade, since it is so close to my skin color without my pigmented lips it would probably look like I’m quite dead.

Praline

Unlike the previous shade, this one is perfect. It applies easily and evenly, is opaque and moisturizing, and is just flat out fabulous. It is a mid toned nude with orange and brown undertones and I really think it would look beautiful on anyone, whether on fair or dark toned skin. This is my most used shade, since it is a perfect day to day shade.

Rich Red

Rich Red

A classic red shade with a cold blue undertone. Honestly I used to feel like red shades as these don’t suit me, until I realized I just need to find the right red for my skin tone. This bright red is one of those shades I now constantly wear (along with Dose of Colors shade Scarlet Lace – which I wrote about in a previous post), it is opaque, smooth and easy to apply.

Cranberry

Another red shade, except that this one is a medium warm toned burgundy (same as the name suggests), the type of reds I’m more used to wearing. This shade as well is opaque, even, easy to apply and moisturizing.

Berry Sorbet

This is the purple shade of the bunch, a magenta with pink undertones. This is another favorite of mine – I love purple (I believe I’ve mentioned this fact in a previous post) and this also applies to my lipsticks (I have countless purple lip shades). And yes, this shade is also opaque, easy to apply and moisturizing.

Dash of Pink

Dash of Pink

Dash of Pink is a beautiful coral pink which I think is perfect for this time of year, as well as for the upcoming summer. The shade is moisturizing and easy to apply, but unfortunately on me it emphasizes all the lines and cracks on my lips. Oh well. By the way, I’m completely aware of the fact that this lip color does not really go with my eye makeup. Next time I’ll do lip swatches I’ll keep in mind that I need more of a neutral eye look 😉

Natural

Natural

Another nude shade, which is a tad darker than Nearly Nude and is more on the pink side. This shade is a My Lips But Better kind of shade. Although this is a shade I really love, it also emphasizes my dryness and lines, and it is a bit dryer so the color needs to be built up.

The last shade I own also happens to be my favorite. It is a perfect nude-pinky-mauve shade, it is super moisturizing and doesn’t feel matte at all. It’s only downfall, like all the other bright shades, is that it emphasizes what shouldn’t be emphasized (yet not as much as the other shades I’ve mentioned). Regardless, I still love this shade so so much.

And those are all the shades I have. I really do love these, and even though they aren’t perfect, I still think they are great, especially for what you pay. e.l.f. is yet another brand that proves that you don’t have to spend a fortune to get good products. I have no doubt I will be purchasing more shades from the range (ehm..one is already on it’s way to me!).

Is matte or glossy lips better?

Your natural lip shape and size can also influence your choice. If you have thin lips and want to create the illusion of fullness, glossy lipstick can work wonders. Conversely, if you have naturally full lips and prefer a more understated look, matte lipstick may be your best bet.
