Pokemon Company's present stated years ago he thought the Switch was going to fail, that in the age of smartphones, nobody would buy a games console.

If Sword/Shields development had already started at that time, it would make sense to make it a 3DS game if the Switch was expected to fail.

No but I think assets from SM were used because the development cycle most likely didn't allow them to make new models for all billion Pokemon

There are some people mixing up "originally being made for the 3DS" and "is an unchanged 3DS port".

Can you get Pokemon sword and shield on 3DS?

Please note the following guidelines when transferring Pokemon from other games.

  • Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond, Pokémon Shining Pearl, Pokémon Sword, and Pokémon Shield are mutually compatible with Pokémon HOME. You will be able to deposit and withdraw Pokémon to and from each of these games.
  • Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! can link to the Nintendo Switch version of Pokémon HOME. You can move Pokémon back and forth between Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! or into Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield. • Pokémon from Nintendo 3DS Pokémon titles stored in Pokémon Bank can be moved to Pokémon HOME. Certain Pokémon originating from Pokémon Bank can be moved to Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond, Pokémon Shining Pearl, Pokémon Sword, or Pokémon Shield. Check the Pokémon details in Pokémon HOME to see which game a specific Pokémon can travel to. Once a Pokémon from Pokémon Bank is moved into Pokémon HOME, it cannot be moved back to Pokémon Bank.

For additional details, please review our information about transferring Pokémon to Pokémon HOME.
