Point-per-reception leagues used to be the minority in fantasy football; now, they seem to be the norm. It makes sense since the NFL has become such a pass-first league. Even still, it’s running backs, not necessarily the wide receivers and tight ends, who are the most important players in fantasy football – including PPR leagues. That’s why our 2022 fantasy RB PPR rankings are a key component to any draft cheat sheet, as you need to know the top players, best sleepers, and biggest potential busts. Why are RBs so important in PPR leagues? Well, wide receiver points are fairly easy to come by. The drop in PPR contribution rate from top-tier WRs to, say, third-tier WRs is much less substantial than the drop in production from top-tier RBs to third-tier RBs. Additionally, you can always find pass-catching wideouts and tight ends on the waiver wire throughout the season, whereas pass-catchers out of the backfield are usually already rostered by the start of Week 1. DOMINATE YOUR DRAFT: Ultimate 2022 fantasy cheat sheet If you’re not getting production from your RB, you’re probably going to have a tough time contending for your league’s fantasy title. According to FantasyPros, Jonathan Taylor, Austin Ekeler, and Najee Harris were three of the most heavily-rostered players on playoff teams in PPR leagues last season. 2022 PPR RANKINGS: That makes sense since all three players were heavily involved in their respective teams’ offenses both on the ground and through the air. Taylor had 51 targets — well below the 94 that both Ekeler and Harris saw — but he made up for that with a machine-like 332 carries. Derrick Henry, the rushing champ of the previous two seasons, had an unfathomable 378 totes in ‘20. If you’re getting a guy with 381 total touches like Harris or 372 like Taylor, you’re sitting pretty in any format. 2022 RANKINGS TIERS & DRAFT
STRATEGY: But with lower-usage backs, you must be analytical. How efficient are they with their touches and targets? What’s their touchdown rate in the red zone or within the opponents 10-yard line? Are they durable? Has their role potentially expanded since last season, or are they due for some negative regression? 2022
AUCTION VALUES (Standard & PPR): The usual suspects we already mentioned live in the top tier, with ‘when-active’ PPR beasts Dalvin Cook, Christian McCaffrey, and Alvin Kamara easily nestled right behind. The only thing holding those guys back is games played concerns: Cook has yet to play more than 14 games in any season; McCaffrey has totaled 10 over the past two campaigns; and Kamara could face suspension for an offseason incident. 2022 FANTASY SLEEPERS: After those studs, there are plenty of high-upside younger players. D’Andre Swift had a 79.5-percent catch rate and 17.4-percent target share in ‘21, and he should see increased opportunities in his third season now that he’s fully healthy. Joe Mixon, the third-ranked back in ‘21, saw a career high in rushes and touches last season, and his offense should only improve entering QB Joe Burrow’s third campaign. Antonio Gibson wasn’t the breakout many of us thought he would be, but he looked pretty solid toward the end of the season despite a poor QB situation. He should see an expanded role this season, as should Leonard Fournette with Tom Brady a year older and now without Rob Gronkowski and Antonio Brown. 2022 STANDARD
RANKINGS: Speaking of expanding roles, Nick Chubb could be without a serviceable starting QB for the foreseeable future now that Baker Mayfield is in Carolina and Deshaun Watson could be facing a lengthy suspension. Dump-off city, right? Well, Chubb already loses considerable snaps to pass-catching wiz Kareem Hunt, and in the two games Chubb played without Mayfield last season, he averaged just 7.6 total PPR points. We’ll continue to rank him lower in PPR leagues compared to standard leagues until he gives us a reason not to. The same goes for Damien Harris, JK Dobbins, Elijah Mitchell, and AJ Dillon among others. Conversely, guys like Aaron Jones, Josh Jacobs, Cordarrelle Patterson, and Chase Edmonds get nice bumps up in PPR leagues. There are also pass-catching specialists, like Nyheim Hines, J.D. McKissic, and James White, though the latter two might have reduced roles this year. Rookies are always a bit of a wild card in PPR leagues, as a decidedly non-fantasy issue (pass protection) can affect how often they’re on the field in passing situations. Breece Hall, Kenneth Walker III, James Cook, Tyler Allgeier, Dameon Pierce, and more first-year players all have intriguing profiles given their situations, but it’s tough to expect any to have a Harris-like impact as a receiver in Year 1. Fortunately, we should get some insight on these players and others based on preseason usage. 1 Jonathan Taylor, ColtsWhat can we tell you about Taylor that his 2021 stats and rankings don’t already say? At 23, he’s a durable workhorse with toughness and blistering speed, and he’s capable of gashing defenses on the ground and through the air. He led the NFL in rushes, ground yards, total yards, and touchdowns last season. His offensive line remains one of the best in the biz, and Matt Ryan should be an improvement over the oft-injured, oft-inconsistent Carson Wentz under center. With Derrick Henry coming off a major injury, Taylor is the obvious choice at No. 1.
 2 Najee Harris, SteelersHarris is, quite literally, the Steelers' offense. Of course, that may ring true for Taylor and Henry, as well, but the Colts and Titans do still have better ancillary pieces and steadier veteran QB play. Pittsburgh will start either Mitchell Trubisky or Kenny Pickett and has one of the worst offensive lines in pro football. “Wait, why is he advocating for a back with a weak offensive line?” Well, internal voice within content, it’s because Pittsburgh will be handing off, dinking, dunking, dropping, and screening to Harris early and often. Ben Roethlisberger did it with the rookie Harris last season, and Pittsburgh’s QBs will do it even more this year. And while you don’t get a point for each catch in standard leagues, you certainly get a point for his 499 yards after catch (third among RBs).
3 Austin Ekeler, ChargersEkeler might be due for some negative touchdown regression after finding paydirt an NFL-leading 20 times in 2021 (12 on the ground, eight through the air). He’s also coming off the first season in his five-year career in which he started 16 games. Will the oft-injured back stay healthy two seasons in a row? Ek tallied 276 touches last season, 54 more than his previous career high. If he stays healthy and anywhere near that involved, he’s a top-five back. If he gets banged up or the Chargers start throwing the ball more, it could spell trouble. We couldn’t possibly blame you for taking any one of the next few guys over Ekeler — the combo of speed and toughness (and recency bias) propel him to the five-spot for us even in standard leagues.
4 Derrick Henry, TitansHenry will be a hell of a consolation prize for folks who land the No. 2 pick and miss out on Taylor. The big, bruising back is coming off a broken metatarsal bone in his right foot, but he’s not human anyway, so he should be able to recover better than anyone. The back-to-back rushing champ in 2019 and ‘20, King Henry turned back the hands of time with his usage during that two-season stretch. He saw a staggering 378 carries in ‘20 and had a combined 718 touches across those two seasons. Obviously, the wear-and-tear are at least minor worries, but any back who has proved himself as consistently capable of averaging 115-130 yards and at least one TD per game deserves our respect. Henry does lose a bit of value in PPR leagues, but he’s still capable of a top-five finish there.
5 Christian McCaffrey, PanthersAnother player with a ton of “ifs” attached to his name, McCaffrey used to be the consensus pick for No. 1 but now finds himself slipping into double-digits in some drafts. The only factor working against CMC has been health. The former All-Pro has played just 10 games over the past two seasons, but it’s worth noting he was fifth in FPPG among RBs in PPR leagues last year (18.2) and remains one of the most complete backs in the NFL. The upside is there, so it all comes down to how much risk you want with your first-round pick.
6 Alvin Kamara, SaintsHere’s a gray-area ranking that hinges greatly on an NFL disciplinary ruling. Kamara remains a top-five RB talent-wise (especially in PPR leagues), but he’s closer to a second- or third-round asset if he gets suspended four-to-six games after being charged with felony assault in the offseason. (Update: Kamara is no longer expected to be suspended this year.) When he’s on the field, the five-time Pro Bowler’s impact is obvious — Kamara has a 4.6 lifetime yards-per-carry average and has scored 67 TDs in 73 career games. He’s also one of the best receiving backs in the NFL, recording at least 81 receptions in four straight seasons.
7 Dalvin Cook, VikingsNo back outside the top three has more pound-for-pound upside than Cook, an electric playmaker who’s hell to bring down in the open field. A Pro Bowl selection each year is the benchmark, as is a yards-per-carry average around 5.0. He’s also usually in the low-80s for catch rate and somewhere between eight and 10 yards per reception, but last year was an off-year for Cook’s aerial numbers. Expect a bounce back in that department, with Minnesota focusing on its offensive line this offseason. Just always go into Cook ownership with the knowledge that he’s never played more than 14 games in a season.
8 D'Andre Swift, LionsIf injuries weren’t an issue, Swift might be in the single-digits of this list, but they very much do exist, and the 23-year-old has maxed out at 13 games in each of his first two seasons. When he suits up, fantasy owners rejoice — he averages 4.3 yards per carry, has an 80-percent catch rate, and has scored 17 all-purpose TDs for a bad team. Well, the Lions might not be so bad anymore — they brought in former Jag DJ Chark and rookie speedster Jameson Williams to bolster the WR corps and improved their offensive line considerably with three first-rounders, a third-rounder, and a big free-agent fish. Swift could yield first-round value in PPR leagues and second-round value in standard leagues if everything works as planned.
9 Joe Mixon, BengalsSome will view this as a disrespectful ranking after Mixon’s breakout 2021 campaign, but how much higher should we be going? Entering his sixth season, Mixon seems like a prime candidate for regression. His total yards (1,519) was a career high but not too far off his norms, and his yards-per-carry average (4.1) was nothing special. The key for the 26-year-old back was that he finished third in touches (334) and goal-line carries (16), helping him to 16 TDs (13 on the ground). With Joe Burrow and his deep wide receiver corps one year older and wiser, it stands to reason that the Bengals will let their franchise QB attempt more than his ‘21 total of 520 passes (199 fewer than Tom Brady in his age-44 season). Feel free to grab Mixon in the first round of PPR leagues — he did haul in 42-of-48 targets (87.5 percent) for 314 yards and three TDs — but picking him in the first round of standards would entail plenty of risk.
10 Leonard Fournette, BuccaneersFournette had an underwhelming 2020 but vastly exceeded expectations in ‘21. Is he an every-other year guy? Maybe, or maybe he just needs higher usage to start cooking. Fournette no longer has to worry about Ronald Jones II vulturing his touches, but rookie Rachaad White could eat into his workload a bit (he also could eat himself out of a bellcow workload). Still, if Lenny gets another 249 touches and stays healthy, another 10 TDs and 185-point season could be on the horizon. He also upped his PPR value mightily last year, finishing third among RBs in receptions (69) after recording just 36 catches the year before.
11 Javonte Williams, BroncosWilliams enters the top 10 in RB rankings after a very strong rookie season and Denver’s offseason addition of Super Bowl champion Russell Wilson. The 2021 second-round pick averaged 4.4 yards per carry, caught 43-of-52 targets, tallied 1,219 yards from scrimmage, and scored seven total TDs last year – not too shabby for a guy who equally shared carries with veteran Melvin Gordon. Broncos offensive coordinator Justin Outten, formerly with Green Bay, recently likened Denver’s usage plan with Williams and Gordon to the Packers’ usage of Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon last season. That bodes well for Williams, the better pass-catcher and more electric playmaker. It also doesn’t hurt that he’s 22 while Gordon turned 29 in April. A breakout could be in the works here.
A running-receiving hybrid threat, Jones could become the focal point of reigning MVP Aaron Rodgers’ offense this season with wideout Davante Adams in Vegas. He could also continue to regress and cede a ton of touches to young, bruising backup AJ Dillon. The truth may ultimately lie somewhere in between those two hypotheticals. Jones had 16 TDs and 1,558 yards from scrimmage three seasons ago, but his numbers declined in each of the past two seasons. He did haul in 52 receptions on an 80-percent catch rate in 2021, so the PPR upside seems obvious. However, in standard leagues, he’s outside the teens, mainly because he always gets banged up and Dillon should continue to steal his touches in the red zone.
13 Ezekiel Elliott, CowboysA drop down to 13 shouldn’t be viewed solely as a suggestion that Zeke has lost his elite abilities; rather, his abilities aren’t needed as much in Dallas as they were five years ago. The three-time Pro Bowler’s 13.9 carries per game in ‘21 easily ranked as the fewest in his six-year career, as were his 58.9 rushing yards per game and 6.1 yards per reception. Tony Pollard, meanwhile, ranked second in the league with 5.5 yards per carry and saw his attempts go from 86 in ‘19 to 130 in ‘21. What saved Zeke from fantasy bustville last season was his 10 TDs on a whopping 35 red-zone carries (seven TDs came on 17 carries inside the opponents’ 10-yard line). Expect some regression from last season’s No. 6 fantasy back, especially with a schedule that should be much easier on the passing game than it will be for rushers.
Akers had a solid but unspectacular rookie season in ‘20, averaging 4.3 yards over 145 attempts and catching 11-of-14 targets for 123 yards. However, a strong postseason had fantasy owners excited heading into 2021. A torn Achilles in the ‘21 preseason dashed those hopes, but Akers returned just in time for the postseason. He failed to impress, averaging just 2.6 yards per carry, but it was still nice to see him operate as L.A.’s lead back with the season on the line. The opportunity remains for Akers to be a top-10 talent — he’s 23 and the best RB on a Super Bowl-winning offense with a strong offensive line. Darrell Henderson Jr. hasn’t proven to be the answer for L.A., so the door is open for Akers.
15 James Conner, CardinalsAnother thing nobody saw coming in 2021 was the second breakout season of Conner’s career. The former Steeler scored a whopping 18 TDs — 15 on the ground — while catching 37-of-39 targets. He finished as the RB5 in both standard (220.5 points) and PPR (257.7) leagues! Of course, regression seems imminent. For starters, before his 15-game ‘21 season, he maxed out at 13 games in each of his previous three campaigns, and the 239 touches – including 28 carries inside the opponents’ 10-yard line – should decrease with Kyler Murray back to full health. Also, Conner averaged a palry 3.7 yards per carry last year, so he’s much more health and TD-dependent than most players ranked even this high.
16 Saquon Barkley, GiantsBarkley has been a shell of his early-career self the past two seasons. We all can’t seem to expunge ourselves of his NFL-leading 2,028 yards from scrimmage and 15 TDs in his 2018 rookie season, though. Hell, even a duplication of his 1,441 yards and eight scores in 13 games in ‘19 would be accepted by most Barkley owners this season. He’s coming off a campaign in which he averaged 3.7 yards per carry, caught just 41 passes, and scored four TDs. His ceiling remains high, but it’s tough to draft him earlier than the teens at this point. One more subpar season and he’s getting bounced out of the top 20.
A three-time Pro Bowler with a 5.3 lifetime yards-per-carry average, Chubb could be a victim of circumstance for part of the upcoming season, if not all of it. The Browns went all-in on Deshaun Watson at QB despite a massive amount of sexual misconduct allegations swirling around him, and amidst the madness, they traded Baker Mayfield to the Panthers. Now Chubb could be without a true QB1 under center, which means all sorts of trouble for the talented young back. In the two games Chubb played without Mayfield under center last season, the three-time Pro Bowler put up single-digit fantasy points. Monitor this situation closely, as Chubb already has to contend with Kareem Hunt for touches; he doesn’t need the added handicap of minimal scoring opportunities.
Jacobs is a letdown of a third-round pick but a triumph of a fourth-rounder. He’s the classic dependable RB2 in a good offense — he’ll get you 1,220 scrimmage yards and catch around 80 percent of his targets. Perhaps surprisingly, he caught a whopping 54-of-64 targets last season, raising his value in PPR leagues. His lifetime FPPG is 12.6 in standard leagues and 14.7 in PPR. The Raiders’ offensive depth chart is a bit more bogged down with All-Pro wideout Davante Adams joining the mix with Jacobs, RB Kenyan Drake, WR Hunter Renfrow and stud TE Darren Waller, but 1,200 yards with seven TDs and 45 catches will do just fine.
19 Clyde Edwards-Helaire, ChiefsEveryone always seems to rag on CEH, but he’s consistently decent when he’s on the field. He can’t do much about missing three games in his rookie year and seven last season — injuries happen to every player on this list. Maybe the collective ire from fans and fantasy owners culminates from the fact that he’s not explosive compared to Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Tyreek Hill. Well, Hill has taken his talents to South Beach, so the touches will most likely increase for the third-year back. If he can continue his career rate of 4.4 yards per carry and garner more opportunities, he’ll be a very valuable fantasy asset. CEH caught 82.6 percent of his targets last year, but he had just a six percent target share. He also scored TDs in four of his seven rushing attempts inside opponents’ 10-yard line. Feed him the damn ball! If he had Ezekiel Elliott’s workload, Edwards-Helaire would become one of the steals of the draft. Because of that upside, we still like him as an RB2, but there are obvious risks.
Dobbins displayed flashes of utter brilliance in his 2020 rookie season, averaging 6.0 yards per carry, 6.7 yards per catch, and scoring nine rushing TDs despite just 134 total attempts. However, a left ACL tear robbed him of his sophomore campaign. He should be ready for Week 1, and here’s guessing he’s the workhorse of a backfield that includes veterans Mike Davis (old, mediocre) and Gus Edwards (also recovering from an ACL tear). Lamar Jackson, now 25, has rushed out of the pocket fewer times in each of the past two seasons and battled injuries most of last year. It might be a good time for the talented QB to embrace a more conventional offensive approach, and Dobbins should be just the man to help ease that transition. He doesn’t have as much PPR value given how infrequently Baltimore throws to its RBs, but he should still be an every-week starter.
21 Cordarrelle Patterson, FalconsFalcons fans probably hate this ranking, but the 31-year-old Swiss Army Knife can’t possibly recreate his phenomenal 2021 fantasy football campaign. For one, Matt Ryan has left Atlanta for Indianapolis, leaving the keys to the Falcons offense to Marcus Mariota. Then there’s the all-too-familiar issue of the offensive line, which PFF ranks 28th in the NFL. The Birds also have a bird-crap schedule, one of the worst for backfields. Lastly, rookie Tyler Allgeier could eat into Patterson’s rushing workload. He and Damien Williams seem like much more viable threats than last year’s trio of Mike Davis, Wayne Gallman, and Qadree Ollison. Patterson could conceivably log 150 standard points and 180 PPR, but he won’t hit 183/234 again in his life.
22 Elijah Mitchell, 49ersThe 49ers’ rushing attack always seems to find a way, even when injuries ravage the depth chart. San Francisco drafted QB Trey Lance and RB Trey Sermon in the first and second rounds of the 2021 NFL Draft, but it was sixth-round pick Mitchell that ended up breaking out until he got dinged up with an assortment of injuries (knee, hip, chest). Still, the 24-year-old Louisiana product averaged 4.7 yards per carry and came within 37 yards of a 1,000-yard campaign – not bad for a guy who appeared in 11 of 17 games! Mitchell also caught 19-of-20 targets and averaged 7.2 yards per reception. If Lance gets the green light at QB, Mitchell could be in for a huge season if he can stay on the field, though he’ll remain more valuable in standard leagues compared to PPR.
A Lisfranc injury in Etienne’s left foot sidelined him for the entirety of his rookie season, but he should be ready for Week 1 while fellow Jacksonville RB James Robinson recovers from a torn left Achilles sustained last December. At 5-10, 210 pounds, Etienne has the size, speed, and hands to be an immediate impact-player in Doug Pederson’s brand-new offense. He has 4.45-speed and elite pass-catching skills, owning all sorts of NCAA records. In 55 career games with Clemson (1,852 snaps), Etienne rushed 686 times for 4,952 yards with 70 rushing touchdowns. He also caught 102 passes for 1,155 yards and eight receiving touchdowns. He’s a stud with RB1 upside in what should be a revamped offense, but most owners are leery after the injury. Take advantage of Etienne’s reunion with former Clemson teammate and QB Trevor Lawrence.
24 David Montgomery, BearsLike Jacobs one spot earlier, Montgomery serves as a boring-but-dependable RB2 who can be scooped up in Round 4. Just 25, the fourth-year back has done a lot with a little throughout his time in the Windy City. His 3.9 yards per carry average certainly doesn’t turn heads, but his 24 all-purpose TDs and 121 catches on 154 targets (78.6-percent catch rate) despite multiple QB fiascos speaks to his skill level. With Montgomery, your benchmark expectation will be 15 games, 1,100 total yards, seven touchdowns, and 150 fantasy points. Is 14.3 PPR/11.2 standard FPPG boring? Maybe, but it’s top-20 RB production. Don’t sleep!
25 Chase Edmonds, DolphinsAfter getting a taste for starting RB in Arizona amidst the Cardinals’ barrage of injuries, Edmonds now embarks on his first stint as a nominal “starter,” albeit in a backfield full of veteran castoffs (Raheem Mostert, Sony Michel, Myles Gaskin). It could go well, considering he averaged 5.1 yards per carry last season and caught 43-of-53 targets. He’s also used to warm weather and a subpar offensive line, so Miami should feel just like home. With a juicy RB schedule ahead of him, Edmonds is a good fifth-tier RB, well capable of vastly exceeding his early ADP of 92 if the QB situation gets steadier for the Dolphins.
26 Antonio Gibson, CommandersGibson has a lot of upside, as we've seen the past two seasons, but with preseason reports suggesting he's going to be a second-stringer behind Brian Robinson Jr., Gibson can't be viewed as more than a high-end handcuff with the upside for more. UPDATE: With Robinson suffering two gunshot wounds in late August, it's likely Gibson will operate as the Commanders' starting RB for at least the early part of the season, which means he has a chance to duplicate his production pace from last year and pay off as an RB2.
The Jets picked Hall at No. 36 overall, and we’re ranking him right on the RB2/flex border. At 6-1, 220 pounds, the kid has size and strength that will blow linebackers away on first contact. He also has sub-4.40 speed, bellcow endurance, and the ability to improvise under pressure. He put up some incredible numbers at Iowa State, averaging 5.8 yards per carry and finishing with 1,774 yards from scrimmage in his final year. He has phenomenal vision, footwork, and cutting ability, reminiscent of former Jets greats Le’Veon Bell. He seems destined to be the best back in this draft class, and he’ll likely prove to be a steal in Round 4 or 5 if he can hold off second-year back Michael Carter, who impressed at times but was mostly mediocre in his rookie campaign (964 total yards, 36 catches, four TDs).
28 Damien Harris, PatriotsThere are three certainties in life: Death, taxes, and consternation around Bill Belichick’s running back roles. The Patriots coach/GM likes to keep the opponents – and fantasy football owners – guessing. So, Harris possesses top-10 upside in standard leagues. He finished eighth in standard leagues last season, but you can’t bank on that reoccurring. The Pats have second-year back Rhamondre Stevenson, who also had a strong 2021 in his rookie campaign, and incoming rookie Pierre Strong Jr. Harris should still see the bulk of the carries, but no fantasy veteran in their right mind would be surprised if he ends up outside the top 20 because of diminished touch shares.
We keep expecting regression from Hunt, but it never actualizes. The only thing that has ever stopped him is injuries. Last season was the second time in Hunt’s three-year stint in Cleveland in which he only appeared in eight games. He’s entering his age-27 season with multiple ailments under his belt, and cutting remains a major part of his game. Plus, Nick Chubb remains the workhorse, and it remains to be seen who will be under center for most of — if not all of — the ‘22 season. Still, Hunt ranks in the top 30 given his 5.5 yards per carry and 81.5-percent catch rate from a season ago, but, like Walter White once said, “I suggest you tread lightly.”
Excuse the Forrest Gump reference, but “you never know what you’re gonna get” with Sanders. He’s appeared in just 12 games in each of the past two seasons, his career rushing attempts per game is 12.0, and his yards per catch and receiving yards per game have each declined over the past two years. Sanders had a 5.5 yard per carry average in ‘21, sure, but Jalen Hurts tends to, uh, hurt his rushing chances. He’s a better overall runner than the players who appear after him on these rankings, but he’s still a massive wild card. All that said, we’re confident he’ll score more TDs than last year’s zero, but Philly has a stable of capable backs in addition to Hurts who will constantly steal touches.
Pollard tied Nick Chubb for second-most efficient RB in 2021, averaging 5.5 yards per carry. He didn’t just spell Ezekiel Elliott — he often looked better than him. Zeke’s usage rates painted quite the picture. Despite playing the most games of any season in his professional career, Zeke averaged a career-low 13.9 rushing attempts per game. He also had career lows in rushing yards per game (58.9) and receiving yards per game (16.9) while maintaining his second-worst catch rate (72.3 percent). Pollard is a spry 25 while Zeke often looks like an old 27. With the Cowboys’ relatively easy schedule and strong offensive line, Pollard is a high-upside “handcuff” who could be an every-week fantasy starter with just a slightly increased role. If you draft Zeke, you’ll likely have to reach a round early to ensure you get Pollard because he’s the type of handcuff who will be poached by other owners.
32 Kenneth Walker III, SeahawksWalker has elusive change-of-direction abilities, amazing speed to get to the edge, and tremendous breakaway speed. His vision, footwork, and burst with Michigan State last year — where he scored 19 total touchdowns — made him look like LaDainian Tomlinson lite. Seahawks fans lamenting the loss of Russell Wilson to Denver should take solace in the fact that they finally have an above-average rusher on their depth chart. Walker’s early ADP of 90 is either a sign that most fairweather football fans have never heard of him or that Seattle’s offensive line and semi-jumbled backfield scares the crap out of everyone. Rookies tend to pick up steam throughout August, so it’s tough to say where his final ADP will wind up, but he has the potential to outproduce a mid-round valuation if he’s getting the bulk of the carries.
Another talented rookie RB, Cook could supplant Devin Singletary and Zack Moss on the Bills’ depth chart early in the year. The Georgia product might not have the vision of Kenneth Walker III, but he makes up for it with 4.4-speed and phenomenal pass-catching skills. Cook averaged 6.4 yards per carry and 10.5 yards per reception in his senior season with the Bulldogs, and he could be an instant-impact player in Josh Allen’s electric offense. Cook in the late-middle rounds would be quite the get.
Carter showed promise in his rookie campaign despite injuries and basic organizational turmoil. He posted 13 PPR points in five of the 10 games he appeared in, including a 32-point behemoth against Cincy in Week 8. But alas, Carter’s just a high-upside handcuff now that Gang Green grabbed Breece Hall.
We’ve officially entered sleeper territory! With Packers lead back Aaron Jones seemingly always getting dinged with injuries, Dillon serves as one of the most intriguing handcuffs in fantasy. The 6-0, 250-pound B.C. product known as Quadzilla scored 109.5 non-PPR fantasy points between Week 1 and Week 14 (25th among RBs) and 144.5 standard points through Week 17 (20th). He also made the most of his scoring opportunities, unlike Jones. While Jones scored just four TDs in 32 red-zone attempts last season, Dillon scored five TDs in just 21 attempts inside the opponents’ 10. You’d be hard-pressed to find a more high-upside RB after Dillon’s ADP of 55.
36 Devin Singletary, BillsSingletary is like Shangri-La — you want to believe, but you’re 99.9-percent sure it’s just not a thing. Sure, he finished strong last season, scoring five TDs in Buffalo’s final four regular-season games and netting 86-plus ground yards in three of them, but James Cook is in town, and Singletary has underwhelmed or been overmatched any time he’s seen legit competition for touches. Some will grab him in the seventh round of 12-team leagues — we’ll hold off until the ninth.
37 Rashaad Penny, SeahawksWe like the aforementioned Walker more season-long and in keeper leagues, but Penny could provide the most immediate return on investment. The veteran RB, who just re-signed with Seattle on a one-year, $5 million deal, was the fantasy RB1 over the final five weeks of ‘21. When healthy, he’s a solid starter against average to below-average defenses. However, there are still injury issues here, and when a team drafts a rookie RB relatively early, it’s tough to ignore the impact that’s bound to have.
38 Melvin Gordon III, BroncosWith MG3 a year older and Russell Wilson in town to win now, Denver will probably start separating the workload into more of a 60-40 split in favor of Javonte Williams. Gordon remains a solid handcuff and matchup-based flex in standard leagues, but don’t expect 38 more targets or another double-digit TD season.
A bruising beast of a 5-10, 220-pound back, Pierce’s highlight reel at Florida makes him look like a distant relative of Marshawn Lynch. He obviously doesn’t have the downhill speed or between-the-tackle abilities of Beast Mode, but he could certainly be good enough to surmount Marlon Mack and Rex Burkhead on the Texans’ depth chart. And even if Houston’s offensive line has another terrible campaign, Pierce should get the majority of whatever goal-line snaps the Texans rack up.
Hines remains one of the premier pass-catching backs in the NFL. He caught 40 passes last year, down from 64 the year before. The upside is there for him to be top 10 in receptions among RBs, and if he can do that -- plus chip in another 300 rushing yards and a handful of TDs, Hines can be a worthwhile PPR flex. Plus, he has more value than most handcuffs because of his valuable role behind Jonathan Taylor.
41 Rhamondre Stevenson, PatriotsGoing back to Bill Belichick’s affinity for backfield consternation — some would even say “clusters” — Stevenson seems full of promise but could instead be full of duds for game logs. He had a 4.6 yards-per-carry average in his rookie season but reached 20 rushing attempts just twice, and his 77.8-percent catch rate was rewarded with over three targets just once. Still, the Pats’ schedule looks enticing for RBs, and look at Stevenson’s production across his three games of 19-plus touches: 299 yards, four TDs. Be intrigued, but also be afraid. Grab him, but not too early.
42 James Robinson, JaguarsRobinson has come back quicker than expected from a left Achilles' injury, and while he still figures to start the season slowly playing behind Travis Etienne, Robinson is a valuable handcuff. Given his all-around skill set, he could have flex value even if Etienne stays healthy.
43 Alexander Mattison, VikingsMattison continues to be the absolute creme de la creme of handcuffs, always at the ready when Dalvin Cook inevitably gets hurt each year. Unfortunately, the appeal ends there. He offers very little value in a backup role. In four starts last season, Mattison racked up 356 yards and three TDs. Across his 12 other games, he had 135 total yards and one TD. He almost yields more value as trade-bait to the Cook owner in your league.
44 Jamaal Williams, LionsWilliams is a good backup in deep PPR leagues, but don’t count on starting him more than occasionally. This is not the territory to bank on sleeper RB3s or flex guys. Williams averaged just a hair over nine PPR points per game in ‘21, so being ranked even this high is more of a reflection of D’Andre Swift’s injury issues.
45 J.D. McKissic, CommandersMcKissic would never sniff a top-50 ranking in standard formats, but his continued excellence in the passing game lands him on our PPR list. The Bills almost lured the veteran RB to Buffalo, where he probably would have found himself even higher on our rankings, but Washington squashed the deal and made him an offer he couldn't refuse. The pros: McKissic put together two seasons as a top-37 PPR back, making him a plug-and-play FLEX, and Washington clearly likes him a lot. The cons: He's 29, the Commanders already have stud RB Antonio Gibson and rookie Brian Robinson, and McKissic has never produced more than four TDs or 954 all-purpose yards. He's a RB4/RB5 with injury-based upside. In shallow leagues, fade like August grass.
46 Darrell Henderson Jr., RamsHenderson is an oft-capable, matchup-dependent backup when Cam Akers gets hurt, so you might want to target him to leverage the Akers owner in trade negotiations. Don’t build him into your long-term fantasy strategy, though, unless you drafted Akers.
The Gus Bus could be stuck at the station to begin 2022 due to a left ACL tear late in the ‘21 preseason. He’s one of the better handcuffs in pro football when healthy, though, and JK Dobbins also tore an ACL last year. Monitor Edwards diligently leading up to your draft.
48 Rachaad White, BuccaneersHere’s another rookie who should walk right into the No. 2 RB role for a strong offensive team. Leonard Fournette seems to have a good season every other year, and last year was a good year for the five-year back (it’s science!). Plus, the 27-year-old has played just 63 games over five NFL seasons (12.6 games per season). Not great, Bob! White might not profile as a highlight-reel guy, but he has decent speed and vision for a 6-0, 214-pound back, and Tom Brady should get the most out of him. White showed his all-around skills during his final season at Arizona State when he ran for 1,000 yards (5.5 yards per carry), caught 43 passes for 456 yards, and scored 16 total TDs. For a late-round flier, you’re better off with White than with another Darrel Williams’ dart throw.
Herbert made the most of his 103 carries and 16 targets in his rookie season, netting 4.2 yards per carry and hauling in 14 catches. He only scored one touchdown, but touchdown dances are pretty rare for guys getting eight total red-zone attempts. Chicago (6-11) averaged just 1.4 red-zone touchdowns and just 18.3 total points per game last season, so there’s plenty of room for positive offensive regression. David Montgomery has averaged just 11.6 starts across his three NFL seasons, so there might be room for Herbert to make some noise and even potentially take over the lead role.
